Youth Devotion: Working for the Lord

I don't know about you, but I have a busy summer ahead… LVR, VBS, packing, moving, saying goodbye to new friends, and catching up with old friends will keep me moving as the coming days get hotter! I'm sure you have days packed full of activity awaiting you, too! Summer jobs, babysitting, catching up on what you didn't get done during the school year… perhaps Mom or Dad are requesting your help with some household tasks that seem less than pleasant! Whatever tasks lie ahead of you this summer, remember Paul's words to the church at Colosse: "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving." (Col. 3:23-24)

The devotion below is provided by Concordia Publishing House
with the Treasure Cove 2006 VBS materials…

Stop for a moment and list the five dirtiest jobs in your household. Who does them? Wouldn't it be great if you had someone else to do them? In New Testament times, they did. Read about it in John 13:1-17.

Washing feet was a dirty, nasty job. Remember, there were no paved highways so people walked on dusty roads. Feet got really dirty in open sandals, so dinner hosts provided servants to wash the feet of their guests. If you were too poor to have a servant, you did the job yourself. If you were very poor, you probably were the servant who washed the disgusting feet. It was a humbling job.

Yet Jesus, God's treasured Son, the disciples' leader and teacher, Savior and Lord, washed their feet. When He did, Jesus showed the disciples that He would do anything for them. Later, Jesus even gave His life on the cross to pay for their disgusting sins and ours. Jesus didn't come to earth to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many (Matthew 20:28). God's Son gave up the riches of heaven to become our Savior. Jesus became poor to make us rich in the treasures of new life, forgiveness of sin, love, joy, peace, and more!

Jesus said one more thing about feet washing: "Do as I have done for you." Grab a towel and go!

You have a packed summer ahead… I know you do! Remember that in all you do this summer you are working for the Lord, Jesus Christ. Whatever you do work at it with all your heart, and find some time this summer to serve Christ and His Church, and to show His Love to others in a very direct way.
